Which are the best and worst areas in South Africa to find a job? Which sectors are hot and where? Where are all the jobs?
We’ve been doing some serious number crunching at Adzuna HQ over the past few weeks, comparing our job search index to the latest unemployment data in the Quarterly Labour Force Survey. This data provides a unique insight to the South African economy, and can help you tailor your job search! Here’s what we found:
The Best Cities to Find a Job…
Our research shows that Johannesburg is the best city in South Africa to find a job, with 9,445 live jobs (at the time of writing). Cape Town is second best, with 5,476 jobs and Durban comes in third with 1,735 jobs. Pretoria and Port Elizabeth round out the top 5 with 1,561 and 531 jobs respectively.
… and the worst!
Towns and cities in Kwazulu Natal and Free State have the most competitive job markets in South Africa. Pietermaritzburg and Bloemfontein remain particularly competitive job markets, with over 250,000 job seekers looking for work, but only have 1,000 advertised vacancies.
Where to Find the Best Pay
Employers in Johannesburg are prepared to pay wages up to 20% higher than those in Cape Town according to our data. The average advertised salary across all sectors in Jo’Burg currently stands at R358,000 per annum, 50k+ higher than other big cities such as Cape Town, Durban, Port Elizabeth and Pretoria.
