As the famous acronym YOLO says “you only live once“. While this is a rather annoying product of today’s world it is certainly true that time is precious. Whether it be personal or professional responsibilities or both everybody has a lot of responsibilities going on. Do you ever get the feeling that you don’t know where the time goes? Time whizzes past without any warning and before you know it another year has gone and you haven’t accomplished any of your career goals. Instead you’re passing the time with meaningless day-to-day duties. Just because you’re busy doesn’t mean you’re using your time effectively. Easier tasks are more satisfying because you get
to cross something off your to-do list, but this list is never ending and it doesn’t lead anywhere. In this article we are going to look focus on what matters the most, those that lead to the highest returns on your effort towards achieving your career goals.
Make Lists Of Your Goals
You’d be surprised how effective simply making a list of your goals is. The action of writing them down makes them more real – then hang your list somewhere where you can see it. Make the list with realistic actionable items otherwise you’ll be so put off and daunted you’ll procrastinate achieving anything on the list at all. This also takes away the stress of remembering everything.
Think about the bigger picture
If you get bogged down in the minute details of everyday life you’ll never achieve your career goals. Take time to step back and think about the bigger picture. What do you want to do and why? Break your career goals down into bite-sized digestible pieces. This will make them less daunting and more achievable.
Break goals down into sub-goals
Your end career goal may seem like an enormous mountain to climb but by simply breaking it down into smaller sub goals, these goals quickly become manageable tasks. Order these tasks in the chronological order you need to do them in order to reach your goal. Remember to consider a realistic timeline then these tasks will then act as the simple stepping stones.
Consider what you need to achieve your goals
Before you get started with hopping across the stepping stones towards your career goal consider what additional resources you need to make these steps a reality. Do you need to learn a new skills, gain extra knowledge, take advice from industry experts…whatever it is, factor this into your plan so that when you need it you are ready to roll.
Celebrate your success.
No matter how small the progress, celebrate your successes. Every time you check something off your list consider it an achievement. One step closer to your dream career goals. Create a ‘have done’ list so you can see how far you have progressed. Give yourself credit where credit is due.
