Congratulations! You have succeeded in identifying your dream job and successfully convinced the company that you are the most qualified candidate for the job above all the other candidates. This is half the challenge, now all you have to do is keep your new job. Here are 5 simple tips to continue impressing at the workplace.
1. Understand What is Expected
The first thing you need to do upon arriving in your new position is to understand what your manager or boss expects from you. Both parties need to agree on what is realistic and achievable to make sure there is no conflict. Managing expectation and satisfying them shows you to be a good team player and can pull your weight to achieving team objectives.
2. Think Outside The Box
Every role has a specific set of duties and responsibilities within a company, but to really impress, do not be confined by these. Be willing to get stuck in where you can and, support colleagues with their objectives and be willing to learn new skills.
3. Develop Positive Relationships
No man (or woman) is an island within the workplace. We spend the vast majority of our lives at work so it is in your interest to invest time in building positive relationships with colleagues and employers. Good relationships are fostered on honesty, trust and respect. If you say you will do something, it is your responsibility to see it through. If for whatever reason you can, be honest and communicate the issue to your team.
4. Be Part Of The Team
Don’t be that person who leaves early every day and never takes part in after-office activities. This does not mean you have to be best friends with every person you work with but be visible, friendly and professional. Avoid being the isolated nobody who is not interested being part of the team.
5. Ask For Feedback
Feedback is the key to improve and grow in your role. Ask your manager and colleagues for their opinion on how you are performing and how you could improve. Of course positive feedback is wonderful to hear but negative feedback can be harder to stomach. Don’t take it to heart and learn from your mistakes – use negative feedback as fuel to drive forward.
We spend so many hours at work that it is worth investing energy in creating a positive reputation of someone who is an asset and a pleasure to have around the office. When the time comes for a promotion or a pay rise, your name will be at the top of the list.
