Learning how to say no at work is one of the most important lessons to learn. In order to prevent burning out at work, it is vital to establish healthy boundaries and say “no” when the moment dictates. Given how difficult it is to find work sometimes, the fear of rocking the boat and getting fired drives people’s reluctance to assert boundaries at work. It is also a mistake to think that you can make yourself indispensable at work because there is always someone waiting in the sidelines ready to pick up where you left off.
When it comes to setting up happy and healthy boundaries at work, we have come up with a few tips to
ensure you don’t cause offence or imply you are unwilling to do your fair share of work.
1. Don’t Say ‘No’ Every Time
If you say ‘no’ to everything passed your way, you’ll get the reputation for being a slacker. Make sure you take on a few extra jobs and responsibilities here and there. This way when you say ‘no’ to something, your boss will know that you have a good reason.
2. Offer Trade Offs
When a sudden urgent project appears and you boss asks you to take on extra responsibility, know that you can offer a compromise. You don’t need to burn yourself out trying to handle your normal responsibilities on top of the new urgent deadline. Offer to put a lower priority job on the back burner swap it with another employee who isn’t so under pressure.
3. Say “no” in Person
There is always room for negotiation when you have a conversation in person. If someone has asked you to take on more responsibility, rather than a flat out ‘no’ over email, go meet in person and see if you can come to an arrangement to suit you both.
4. Use Your Time Wisely
Sometimes taking on new responsibilities gives you the opportunity to prove that you deserve a promotion or a raise. Avoid wasting time on jobs that are not important and are not going to help you climb the ladder to success. These meaningless activities will be an anchor holding you back. Use your time wisely so, if a project comes up, you have the time to potentially showcase some new talents and abilities.
No can be the hardest thing to say, especially at work. But, follow these simple steps and saying ‘no’ could be a very powerful tool in your belt.
