This debate is hot topic in Adzuna HQ this week. Should you eat your lunch at your desk to save time? Or should you take 30mins-1hr to get some fresh air, stretch your legs and walk around. There is a wealth of research that suggests that it is significantly better for your health and concentration to take regular breaks throughout the workday. The same goes for lunch. 99% of the time there is nothing so important that it can’t wait 1 hour while you go get lunch and a well deserved break. We are all guilty of dropping
breadcrumbs over your keyboard while you try to reach the end of your inbox over lunch. Why are emails more important than your health? Here are 10 reasons to go out for lunch.
1. Productivity
Your body and brain is not a machine. Every now and again you need to rest and recharge to get the most out of a day.
2. Creativity
Do some of your best ideas come to you in the shower or on your morning run? This is largely due to the same reason as #1. Your mind is not a machine so when you give it room to breath and rest, some of your best ideas have room to materialise. Fresh ideas are more likely to happen when your brain is free to wander. Was there ever a better reason to take a lunch break.
3. Mindful eating
As you eat your lunch at your desk, you’re probably inhaling your sandwich, dropping crumbs everywhere, without taking the time to appreciate your appreciate your food. If you take the time to consider your food as you eat it, you’ll absorb more nutrients and stay fuller for longer.
4. Make friends at work
Good relationships at work will improve your overall job satisfaction. We’re not saying you need to invite your colleagues to your wedding or for a sleepover but taking an hour for lunch to chat and relax will make your work life more pleasurable.
5. Get some fresh air.
Clear your head, get away from the stuffy or over air-conditioned office and get some fresh air.
6. Too much sitting could kill you
OK this sounds slightly melodramatic but studies show that prolonged sedentary (that is sitting down without moving) periods can lead to type 2 diabetes, heart disease, metabolism issues and other health issues. Lunch is the perfect excuse to walk around a little and get your muscles moving.
7. Keep your desk crumb free
We’ve already touched on this but let’s say it again. Your keyboard is for working, not to be used as a plate for your lunch.
8. Enjoy your food
Food is delicious and nutritious. If you eat it at 100 bites a second you will have no idea what you’ve eaten. Take time to enjoy it.
9. Networking opportunity.
No job is forever, so grab every networking opportunity possible to take your career to the next level. Whether with existing colleagues or new acquaintances, lunchtime is a perfect networking opportunity.
10. Lunch with old friends.
Who says you have to stay at work for lunch. If you have friends or family working in the area, book a lunch with them. Its the perfect excuse to clear your head and think of something totally separate to work. It is important to have a flourishing social life outside work to keep a balanced work/home life.
