Everyone is guilty of stretching the truth in job interviews. Especially if you REALLY want the job, you’re in the hot seat, and you find yourself exaggerating or flat-out lying to convince the hiring manager your the one for the job. It is an easy trap to fall into, but it is not the best strategy. Interviews were not born yesterday and they can smell a lie from a mile off. They have seen and heard them all. Here at Adzuna HQ in South Africa we have compiled a list of the worst lies people tell in interviews. Avoid them at all costs.
1. I work well with everyone. Everyone loves me
2. I quit my last job, I wasn’t sacked
3. I love a 2 hour commute. It gives me time to myself
4. Yes I have definitely researched your company
5. I am a great team-leader. I love working with people.
6. There is no point contacting my last boss, he loved me!
7. Relocation!? Yes please
8. I don’t test well, ignore my school grades
9. How would former colleagues describe you? Captain fabulous!
10. Disruptive? Never! I hate office gossip
11. You can smell smoke on me? My dog is trying to quit.
The best thing to do in interviews is to present the best version of you. Don’t tell lies.
Happy job hunting!
