There is nothing easy about starting your own business, from finding investment to the long work hours, constant pressure and more. One of the biggest hurdles, and also the most exciting moments is the hiring new employees. There inevitably comes a time when entrepreneurs need to delegate and share the workload by hiring new staff, someone whose skills set and strengths complement areas where they’re lacking. Here are 3 questions to ask before hiring a new employee.\"3<\/a><\/p>\n

1. Do you really need another employee?<\/h3>\n

An early stage entrepreneur will consider hiring a new staff member for one of two reasons; you’re killing yourself with the weight of the workload and there aren’t enough hours in the day, or because you need someone with a skill set that you just don’t have. While these are worthy reasons, think to yourself, is it really worth the cost of hiring a new team member.<\/p>\n

Is there actually enough work for another person. If you imagine duplicating yourself, would you both be busy every day? Secondly, if you’re lacking a specific skill set, ask yourself if an existing member of the team could fill the void or can you find a way to get the job done without hiring a new person?<\/p>\n

2. How do you hire?<\/h3>\n

This question considers whether you need another full-time employee or would it work to get someone in on a part-time basis. Some startup companies hire developers for one day a week because there isn’t enough work to justify a full-time position. Alternatively, you could get someone in on a trail basis, set them some measurable targets and evaluate whether it is worth the extra expense. Did they meet and exceed their targets? Did they work well with the team and did they take the initiative to go over and beyond? If the answer is yes, then it’s time to hire. Hiring interns is another good way to test the water for the necessity of a new member of staff without breaking the bank.<\/p>\n

3.\u00a0The question of equity.\"3<\/a><\/h3>\n

There are some first-time entrepreneurs who hand out equity to their startup like nobody’s business. This is one of the biggest pitfalls of an early stage startup. You have to remember that equity in a startup is worth nothing until you’ve actually turned the company into something. Only share it with employees who are likely to really transform the business, really contribute to making it a success.<\/p>\n

On the other side, some startup founders tend to hoard equity, wanting to keep it all for themselves. This is just as damaging. Your business is only as successful as the people in it. It doesn’t matter how disruptive your product is unless your team is just as driven and ambitious as you are to make the business a success, it will go nowhere.
