That could very well be because no human eyes ever perused it at all, says research from Adzuna, South Africa\u2019s premier job search website.<\/p>\n<p>New screening software sifts through CVs and only shortlists those that seem to have the right qualifications and experience for the job, based on what recruiters have entered as minimum requirements.<\/p>\n<p>Applicant Tracking Software (ATS) systems are now quite numerous and some of them represented by global companies. Some are very sophisticated and others rather rudimentary and your CV needs to get past both of them. Your CV, whether in a file format like Word (.doc) or PDF, is stored in a searchable database and then parsed.<\/p>\n<p>Parsers are software components that remove styling to leave strings of text that are machine readable. Thereafter systems can read what your CV is about. However, if your r\u00e9sum\u00e9 doesn\u2019t parse well, you\u2019ll be at a disadvantage. If you want to get past these digital doormen, you\u2019ll need to make sure your CV adheres to these 15 tips.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Do\u2019s:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Proofread carefully to avoid misspellings, especially on vital words such as job titles or skills. Don\u2019t rely on a spellchecker.<\/li>\n<li>Use a standard word editor to format and save your CV \u2013 not every ATS can handle PDFs.<\/li>\n<li>Pick out important words from the job ad and use them (and variations of them) in your CV.<\/li>\n<li>Use proper capitalisation so groups of words that are related to each other are recognised.<\/li>\n<li>Use a standard font in black \u2013 Arial, Courier and Tahoma are ideal.<\/li>\n<li>Remain consistent when reporting employment history \u2013 Company Name, Title, Location, and Date is a standard format.<\/li>\n<li>Upload your CV instead of copy and pasting to ensure formatting is kept.<\/li>\n<li>Use standard CV headings such as Summary, Work, Skills and Education<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Don\u2019ts<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Use image files in place of text.<\/li>\n<li>Use white font to include hidden keywords \u2013 some ATSs can see this invisible text and you\u2019ll look like you\u2019re trying to cheat the system.<\/li>\n<li>Use unnecessary abbreviations that an ATS might not recognise. When using industry abbreviations, include the spelled-out version of the word in the first instance<\/li>\n<li>Use special characters (plain bullet points are ok)<\/li>\n<li>Use tables.<\/li>\n<li>Put text in the header or footer \u2013 it may be ignored.<\/li>\n<li>Submit multiple CVs to the same company for the same job \u2013 it can look like spam.<em><br \/>\n<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Getting your CV past the ATS software and into the hands of the hiring manager is only the first step. You\u2019ll still need to make sure your CV is fit for human eyes, and if invited for an interview, you\u2019ll need to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adzuna.co.za\/blog\/2018\/02\/26\/how-to-use-psychology-to-make-your-job-application-stand-out\/\">impress in person<\/a>.
