Job hunting is a challenging part of anybody’s life. The months of searching for the perfect opportunity, tailoring your resume, applying for interviews, coping with rejection. The process is filled with thrills and spills, but in order to avoid the downs and capitalise on the ups, here are 3 job hunting strategies that don’t work.
1. Repeat Sending The Same Resume
Sending the same resume over and over to the same company is futile and does not work. You can reapply to the same company, but you have to make sure not sending the same dud version. It might be a good idea to ask a professional in a similar industry to go over your resume and cover letter to double check you are presenting your skills and experience in the best way possible.
2. Avoid Resume Creation Software.
This is a common misconception that your resume needs to be this over produced, masterpiece of design. While this can definitely help if you are in this field, a better use of your time is to focus on producing a professional resume that highlights your skills and achievements in a way that is tailored for the job in question.
3. Stay Glued To Your Computer
While much of your job search will start from your computer, there is so much more you can do outside in the world. Get yourself out and about, invited to networking events, meet and greets; spreading the word about your job search. Talk to your friends, family, former work colleagues; volunteer, intern and consult for companies in the industry. You never know, these may turn into job offers, but in the meantime, you are honing your skills and improving your list of networks.
