Why You Shouldn’t Exaggerate on Your Resume

Exaggerate on Your Resume

Most professional, at some point in their career, will wish that their resume packed a bit more punch, that it contained some sparkling accolades or some big name employers. However, exaggerating on your resume is a recipe for disaster and here’s why.

1. You will have to prove it.

When hiring managers invite you for an interview, you will most definitely be asked a barrage of questions to prove and defend the things you wrote on your resume. And the more effort you try to put in to cover them up, the more obvious you will be in front of your interviewer.

2. They will ask around.

If they like your resume, companies will do a background check on you. They don’t have to be a professional investigator to dig into your professional and personal history and anything that doesn’t line up exactly will make you look bad. Nobody is going to hire a liar. So unless you want to bid farewell to the job that you’ve always wanted, don’t event try.

3. The job is just too much for you to handle.

If you managed to secure the job thanks to your eloquent responses during the interview, what are you going to do when you have to perform your role. If you exaggerated about your skills and experience it won’t take long for the cracks to show. Save yourself the embarrassment.

4. This will be on the records.

When applicants are found out to have lied or exaggerated in their resumes, they can be banned by not only the company that they have applied for, but future applications as well. If you got the job, then you can be fired and may not be accepted by other companies.

Be true to the skills and qualifications that you have and not only will you land the perfect job, but you will also grow career-wise and have a clean and impressive profile that companies look for.
