The salaries of high school teachers are slightly higher with the range sitting between R100,000 ad R340,000 per year. The average high school teacher in SA earns roughly R232,000 per year.
How do I become a teacher in South Africa?
Teachers undergo rigorous training before they can be employed as official teachers in South Africa. They need a National Senior Certificate before being considered for a degree course. The most basic degree teachers can study for is a Bachelor of Education, which should suffice for a primary school teaching job. High school teachers need degrees in the subject they intend to teach.
The undergraduate studies for teachers include a four-year Bachelor of Education degree specialising in the Foundation, Intermediate, and Senior Phases. It also includes the Further Education and Training Phase.
You can also do a 3-4 year course in specialised topics like Arts or Computer Science. This would have to be followed up with a 1-year Postgraduate Certification in Education (PGCE). After you become a qualified teacher, you have to register with the South African Council for Educators.
